How do you counsel a patient with hypertension

Drugs: Captopril, Enalapril, Lisinopril, Atenolol, propranolol, Metoprolol, Nifedipine,  Felodipin, Amlodipine, Prazocine, Terazocine. 


Patient Counseling in Hypertension

Educate patients and family members about weight control, regular exercise, stress management, and avoiding smoking. 


Instruct BP measurement. 


Keep away the factors a triggers heart attack. 


In case of attack, take rest. 


Not to change brand, strength, dose, or type of dosage form without physician’s advice. Consult the physicians regularly. 


Do not discontinue the dosing. Take a missed dose as early as possible, but do not take two doses at once. 


Sustained release tablets must be swallowed whole. 


Do not drive after the administration of drugs. 


During atenolol, propranolol, and Metoprolol therapy diabetic patients should be advised to careful monitoring of blood sugar levels. 


Increase food intake during Nifedipine therapy.
